Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president
of America. He is known as one of the greatest
presidents of all time. Many people admire him
because of the events that happened in his life.
He was born in 1809, in a cabin in Kentucky.
Mr. Lincoln grew up in a poor family. He spent his
childhood living in the woods, where bears and
other wild animals roamed. He did not go to school
very often. This was because he had to work. His work helped to support his family.
Mr. Lincoln had many di!erent jobs. He built fences. He worked on ferry boats. He
helped at a farm.
During all those jobs, he also worked hard to learn. He read books and he wrote
letters. He taught himself all about the laws of America. He became a lawyer and a state
legislature.
Many people liked Mr. Lincoln. He was a hard worker and he told the truth. They
called him Honest Abe.
In 1842, he married a woman named Mary Todd. They started a family, and
Mr. Lincoln kept working hard.
He tried to become a state senator, but he lost the election. Next, he tried to
become the president. This time, he won the election. It was the year 1861.

had been growing. People in the south used human slaves to work on their farms, and
