I crossed the plains of Iowa on a train trip last summer when it was very hot. It was my good fortune that the person who traveled with me was James Quayle Burden. He and I are old friends We grew up together in the same Nebraska town, and we had a lot to talk about. The train fiashed through never-ending miles of ripe wheat. It passed country towns and bright-flowered plains. The burning wind reminded us of many things.
